A groundbreaking statistical framework, developed under the leadership of UN Tourism, has been adopted by all 193 UN member states.
The Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST) has been adopted as the internationally agreed reference for assessing the economic, social, and environmental aspects of tourism.
This milestone is the result of a seven-year UN process led by Austria and Spain as co-chairs of the UN Tourism Committee on Statistics, with Saudi Arabia and Seychelles as co-vice chairs. It was developed with input from 40+ countries and 30+ international and regional organizations.
The UN Statistical Commission expressed enthusiastic support, with active participation from 34 countries, three world regions, and international organizations. The Commission also endorsed the development of an implementation programme, including a compilation guide and financial support for measuring tourism sustainability.
Austria, Spain, and UN Tourism co-organized a high-level side event discussing the significance of MST for evidence-based decision-making. Mexico, the Philippines, and Canada shared insights on integrating data from multiple sources to derive holistic tourism insights.
